What is a CMS? Do I need it? Can I get by without it?
By Shauna Sweet
CMS abbreviation stands for “Content Management System” or "Content Management System." Sometimes another name is used - "software engine". CMS - is a special program that is installed on a hosting site, and which has two main functions. The main function of a CMS – generate and serve Web pages to visitors on the fly, constructing them from predefined design templates, text, images, tables and other content stored in a database. It is important to understand that the site as a set of pages simply does not exist. There are separate designs (templates) and a separate set of different materials - text, images, files, archives, documents, and other materials. CMS creates a page at the time of its request. In this case, depending on the situation, the user may be shown some unique information that will never be visible to anyone else. For example, the contents of a shopping cart in the online store. This is performed by a CMS, or a "site engine". Of course, you can create a website without a CMS. The simplest type of site is a "business card site" could be made in a few minutes by using a tool like Microsoft Word. It's enough to save the file in HTML format and put the file on the hosting server. However, when the number of pages goes from 1 to 100 issues will arise. Simple change such as updating company phone number will require you to manually change it in 100 places. Maintain such a large structure without additional software will be almost impossible. Adding a feedback form to the site will require programming or using a special script which receives data from clients and saves them in a database. This makes it almost impossible for average users to create even a simple site. The good news is - modern CMSs can do this without having to write any code by utilizing ready-to-use "blocks." Second function of CMS - to help the site owner without any special skills manage the site, that is to publish new pages, news, upload videos, make references to external resources and so on. Admin panel usually provides a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor that lets you format text, insert links and images at the same time seeing all in the same form as it will be posted on the site. So, if you develop or maintain a Web site with more than just a few pages or with frequently changing content consider using a Content Management System.

WP makes content management as simple as it could possibly be but you can create a similar HTML site by creating a single page and then cloning it. This can be done using any simple WYSIWYG editor or a programme designed for the purpose.

Agree about WP being the easiest to use CMS. However, sometimes you need more power and flexibility. I personally found Joomla to be a better fit for majority of my projects. Not sure I understand what you meant on cloning a page. Create a copy of it within WP or save it as HTML? Not sure how it was related to this intel.
Thank you for this information. It will come in handy for me, no doubt in the near future.
